a5c7b9f00b Chloe King should be dead. Any normal human being would be under the circumstances, but Chloe has just turned sixteen and has found out she isn&#39;tnormalshe once thought she was. Chloe is Mai - a race of beings with cat-like powers: speed, agility, and claws. Being a high school student was complicated enough, but being Mai has added a new set of problems. Chloe is given the responsibility of protecting both the Mai and Human races. A secret organization wants to have her assassinated - nine times if necessary. And a simple kiss has deadly consequences; so much for falling in love. A girl with special cat-like powers is being hunted by an assassin. In the past, I have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of some ABC Family programs, most notably the recent &quot;Switched at Birth&quot;, which explores the psychological issues that can be attached to adoption and/or deafness. Riding on that high, I decided to try out &quot;Nine Lives&quot;. Oops.<br/><br/>Here&#39;s the gist: Chloe King is a 16-year-old cat woman with nine lives who is destined to be the savior of a race of super-humans. <br/><br/>I won&#39;t waste MORE of my time expounding on details of the plot. I found the acting of the lead actress to be rather vapid and frantic and somewhat insulting to girls of her general age group. Underscoring her uninspiring acting is the unoriginal &quot;cat woman&quot; concept. On top of all of that, the writers make the mistake of trying to draw in their audience too quickly. Before we even know who the main character is supposed to be, she is suffering an identity crisis, which, with no set persona, just comes offa disheveled mess to the viewer. <br/><br/>Don&#39;t get me wrong; the show is well done, and it is perfectly appropriate for most of its base audience of preteen girls. As with hundreds of other shows, the cinematography and the rest of the casting are decent. So here&#39;s my advice: there are dozens of shows of equal quality AND originality. Save an hour or so and skip &quot;Chloe King&quot;. After all, you only have one life to live. With vampires well and truly done with this season, there&#39;s a lot of agencies looking for something new to help stand out from the crowd - some bright spark came up with the idea of &#39;cat-people&#39;a foil to the previously overused &#39;werewolf&#39; option, and Nine Lives was born.<br/><br/>For scripted, obvious, plodding teenage pap, this isn&#39;t terribly bad. At least, notterribleTeen Wolf. From the get-go, every actor in this series has been handed a card with a one-line description of their role, and likely expected to work with it. Most of the actors aren&#39;t bad - they all more-or-less adequately fill their rolesTeen Girl With Super Powers, Funny Best Friend, Evil Bad Guy, Bitchy Mentor, etc. Grace Phipps keeps changing her role from Wacky to Bitchy to something else. Ben and Grey (almostunfortunate a name&#39;Skyler&#39;) are possibly the worst young actors I&#39;ve come across, though. Grey can&#39;t act for the life of him, and for a &#39;love interest,&#39; there absolutely nothing there. Ben, similarly, can&#39;t pull it off, and can&#39;t seem to settle on an accent.<br/><br/>The plot plods along with no definitive structure. There&#39;s an attempt at some overarching plot, and occasional tries for one-off plot insertions, but they conveniently forget things here and there. There&#39;s things mentioned and never touched on again, questions left unanswered, and answers left unquestioned - I can only assume that budgetary or time constraints meant that they had to add and remove stuff without cleaning it up so it made sense. Hell, even the point of the show - the girl with cat-like super-powers - is reduced early on to some basic super hearing, sight and empathy. Perhaps the budget for &#39;running and jumping&#39; ran out?<br/><br/>All in all, I wouldn&#39;t be surprised if season one was the last season altogether. Silver lining? It&#39;s notbadTeen Wolf.
