Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing hima compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.
1862. A Confederate Army soldier, Newton Knight, is disillusioned with the war and its causes. He rebels and deserts the army, going back to Jones County, Mississippi. There he finds even more reasons to despise the Confederate cause. Over time he amasses an army of deserters, women and runaway slaves and turns Jones County, and a few neighboring counties, into an independent region, the Free State of Jones.
I made it to the local multi-plex to see this over the weekend. I remember the first trailer for this I saw on YouTube – I actually thought it was a remake of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" at first. LOL And I must say, it's nice to see a big sprawling historical epic playing in wide release among the big summer blockbusters. <br/><br/>Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey stars in this true story of a Civil War nurse who decides he's had enough of the class inequality in 1860's southern America, and takes it upon himself to not only become a deserter, but start his own independent nation, the "Free State of Jones". Be prepared for some *SPOILERS* just to be warned. <br/><br/>I found this to be a pretty well-done film overall, and would definitely like to look into the back-story of this movie. My only issues with it were it had some "flash-aheads" that seemed sorta un-even comparing them to the rest of the movie's tone, and again *SPOILER* the ending was rather odd – it really didn't come to a conclusion, it just sorta stopped-??? I got an odd vibe from the audience I saw it with, like we're all like, that's IT!-?? LOL I will still give this a recommend, however, it has an important subject, and again, an interesting story I would like to research the actual history of.
The Free State Of Jones tells the tale of Newton Knight a farmer from Mississippi who was at least a century ahead of his times in terms of economics and human rights. After the battle of Corinth he learns that if one is rich enough to own slaves one is exempt from the fight because in this struggle for the rights of one to own another you have to leave some people behind lest the "property" start getting ideas.<br/><br/>The phrase "rich man's war,poor man's fight" never had more meaning than in the situation Knight finds himself in. He just walks away from the Confederate army and before long he's heading a movement back home seceding from the seceding Confederacy. Jones County opts for its own independence.<br/><br/>As played by Matthew McConaughey we see Knight certainly a person of humble circumstances who like Abraham Lincoln is a man who recognizes some great moral issues. McConaughey is humble and modest, but overwhelming in his portrayal. This film might get him a trip to the Oscars.<br/><br/>The two women in his life wife Keri Russell and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the former slave who develops a relationship with McConaughey are also quite moving in their portrayal. Interracial relationships put McConaughey way ahead of his time. There is a modern story of one of his descendants unable to marry because of Mississippi's miscegenation laws post World War II. I'm not sure it was necessary for this film it kind of interrupted the flow of the main plot. In any event it probably deserved its own film.<br/><br/>Down the cast list there is a very moving performance by young Jacob Lofland in the beginning of the filma young Confederate soldier who with McConaughey also realizes what business has he in a fight to protect some plantation owner's right to have slaves. You won't forget it if you see Free State Of Jones.<br/><br/>And you should see it.
The movie remains quiet and deliberate, a synonym for “boring” in some minds (though not mine). In the end, it becomes an allegory for the times in which we live.
